Based on the OM SYSTEM OM-3 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, this is a dedicated astrophotography camera (1) that has been optimized for astrophotography by adjusting the optical characteristics of the infrared cut filter positioned in front of the image sensor, enabling true-to-life capture of red nebulae that are popular with astrophotography enthusiasts. By combining the computerized photography features of OM SYSTEM with optional body filters and a wide range of M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, the OM SYSTEM OM-3 ASTRO enables a wide range of astrophotographic applications - from starscapes to detailed images of constellations and nebulae

The OM SYSTEM OM-3 ASTRO features an IR cut filter in front of the image sensor, whose optical properties are optimally tuned to achieve a transmission of approx. 100 % of the Hα wavelengths, which are crucial for astrophotography. This allows the camera to vividly capture the beautiful shapes and colors of nebulae that emit Hα light, which is difficult to achieve with standard digital cameras.

In addition, the combination of a high-sensitivity back-illuminated stacked Live MOS sensor, OM SYSTEM's most powerful image processor TruePic X, and the OM SYSTEM OM-3's color profile control functions enable clearer reproduction of star colors and faint nebulae, delivering high-resolution image quality even when shooting at high sensitivities.

With the OM SYSTEM OM-3 ASTRO's color profile control functions, users can create detailed, spectacular images in both astrophotography and starscape photography. Color profiles are preset in custom modes C1 to C3, with COLOR1 optimized for astrophotography such as red nebula imaging and COLOR2 for starscape photography. By combining the custom modes with these color profiles, users can easily capture stunning images of the night sky.

And if you want to take your astrophotography to the next level, you can even attach the OM SYSTEM OM-3 ASTRO body to an astronomical telescope using a standard Micro Four Thirds compatible adapter.

Batch processing in High-Res Shot mode produces higher quality images with enhanced detail

High-Res Shot is a computerized photography function unique to OM SYSTEM that uses the ultra-high density pixel information obtained from multiple shots to produce high-resolution images. By using the handheld High-Res Shot, for handheld shooting, or the High-Res Shot setting with a tripod or equatorial mount, you can take a single shot with the body to achieve the batch processing commonly used in astrophotography (3). In addition to the high detail of this method, this type of shooting reduces image noise.

With the OM-3 ASTRO's handheld High-Res Shot function, a single high-resolution image of approximately 50 million pixels is created from 12 captured images by shifting the position during shooting. Since the position of each image is adjusted during stitching, images taken with "Handheld High-Res Shot" and the High-Res Shot with the camera on the tripod result in composite images in which the diurnal movement of the stars is corrected (3). When using an equatorial mount, composite images are also created in which star offsets caused by tracking errors are corrected (3).

Additional functions

The camera settings optimized for star photography are preset in the user-defined modes C1, C2 and C3 on the mode dial.

Like the OM-3, the OM-3 ASTRO has a variety of in-camera functions optimized for starry sky photography.

Two types of useful filters are available for astrophotography (4) , which are attached inside the camera body (between the mount and the image sensor) so that the filter effect is retained even after a lens change (5) . This allows them to be used with lenses such as fisheye and wide-angle lenses where it is normally difficult to attach a filter to the front.

BMF-LPC01 Body Mount for Light Pollution Filter (sold separately)

The Light Pollution Suppression Filter reduces light from artificial light sources such as street and city lights. This prevents light from entering the night sky, allowing you to capture the true beauty of nebulae and constellations more vividly. As the area near the horizon is most affected by light pollution, this filter is also very effective when shooting constellations rising in the eastern sky or setting in the western sky.

BMF-SE01 Body Mount Soft Filter (sold separately)

With their high resolution performance, M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses deliver beautiful point images of stars, the perfect light source. However, since many stars are captured as point images, typical stars can appear less impressive. The BMF-SE01 soft filter blurs and emphasizes point light sources. The brighter the stars are, the more blurred and significant they appear, emphasizing their colors and making these stellar objects stand out.

1. The OM-3 ASTRO offers significantly improved transmission of Hα rays, giving images a strong red cast.
2. We do not recommend using it for applications other than astrophotography

4. When shooting from a fixed position on a tripod, set a shutter speed for an exposure time per frame at which stars are displayed as dots. In some cases, it may not be possible to achieve the desired composite image.
5. When shooting starscapes, the desired results may not be achieved depending on the composition of the image and the amount of ground depicted

7. With short focal length lenses, this may result in images with washed out edges.
