The LEICA DG VARIO-ELMAR features 20 lenses in 13 groups, including one aspherical ED element, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and one UED (Ultra Extra-low Dispersion) element. Despite the extreme telephoto focal length of 800mm (KB equivalent), the optimized arrangement of the lenses enables a very compact design while minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. The magnification of 0.5x (KB) also makes it well suited for macro photography.

The high imaging performance over the entire focal length of the lens, in combination with the POWER O.I.S. image stabilizer, enables maximum sharpness even in extreme telephoto shots taken handheld. A tripod is thus rarely needed. In addition, the LEICA DG VARIO-ELMAR is compatible with Panasonic's exclusive Dual Image Stabilization, which provides even more efficient stabilization by combining the optical stabilizer with the LUMIX GX8's body image stabilizer.
