Your compact system camera, your modern SLR camera or your camcorder are used intensively for recording videos? Fortunately, modern devices nowadays already have quite well-functioning microphones built in and they are also getting better and better. For the beginning as a hobby photographer and amateur director, this equipment may also be enough. But when you venture a bit further and want to make professional recordings, you also rely more and more on good sound. For this purpose, you will find a rich selection of external microphones in our shop, which will perfectly complement your technical video equipment.

Depending on your recording focus, however, you will not be able to get by with just one microphone. We explain which model you need for which sound recordings. Before buying, please check that your camera has a suitable microphone connection. Check your instruction manual to see which connector is available and see which microphones are compatible with it. Usually XLR connectors are used.

Appearance and features of directional microphones

If you want to record voice, for example at a conference with loud background noise, an interview or a family party, you will need a directional microphone. These microphones have a directional pattern, which means that they pick up sound that hits them head-on. Furthermore, they are relatively insensitive to feedback. This is particularly advantageous in a noisy environment, in order to concentrate on the actors being recorded and to hear the noise from the rest of the environment as quietly as possible in the background. The closer you are to the sound source with the directional microphone, the clearer and louder the sound recordings will be. To make this possible, use a boom to which you attach the microphone. You can also use a tripod or simply hold it in your hand if you can get close enough to the person speaking. This is usually not a problem in an interview. Directional microphones have an elongated, cigar-like shape. As a condenser microphone, it has a so-called supercardioid. This means that the sound is picked up via the diaphragm of the microphone only from an area directed towards it and the surrounding noise is neglected.

Important accessories for directional microphones

We all know them, the funny "feather dusters" on the microphones of press photographers. But they have an important function: most directional microphones already have a foam windscreen. The fur windscreen or basket windscreen, on the other hand, is not included. If you are recording outdoors, it is an absolute must for good sound quality to keep wind noise out of the recording.

Another very important accessory is the boom. You can attach your directional microphone to this extendable rod with an elastic mount to get closer to the people speaking. Be careful when using it in crowds. Please do not obstruct other sound assistants or participants and be careful that the boom does not appear in the picture.

Stereo microphones

If you want to record music, for example in a concert hall or studio, a stereo microphone is one way to do it. An alternative would be to use two mono microphones. Please note that a stereo microphone picks up the sound in your environment. So it is not suitable for loud environments.
