Absolutely insensitive - with high sensitivity range
The K-5 is designed for speed, efficiency and versatility. To this end, various innovative detailed solutions mesh perfectly: a new CMOS sensor in APS-C format with 16.3 MP resolution, a new precise and even faster SAFOX IX+ autofocus, and improved image processing by the PRIME II processor. High sensitivity range includes ISO 80 to ISO 51,200, shutter speed 1/8000 second to 30 seconds long exposure.
The sum of the performance data results in a fast frame rate of 7 frames per second. This makes the K-5 the first of the Pentax SLR cameras to push deep into ambitious to professional sports and action photography.
Regardless of this, the lightweight and compact camera naturally remains an excellent tool for reportage, nature and people photography.
The K-5 is based on the unique chassis with 77 body seals to protect against splash water, moisture, dirt, dust, ice, snow and temperatures down to minus 10°C.
The autofocus system has been completely redesigned and now sets the optimal focus faster and more precisely. In the dark, the system is supported by a green metering beam.
The correct exposure is determined by the 77-segment TTL exposure system. It is coupled to information from the autofocus as well as to the lens used.
The 3" large, detailed monitor (921,000 dots) offers maximum security for image composition. With Live View Option including face detection, contrast AF, and a magnifier function, the photographer has the image composition under control. Four freely selectable monitor views provide valuable services. In addition to the standard view, a grid, a scale and a grid with golden section are available.
Of course, the monitor is equipped with a special coating that makes it insensitive to scratches.
The bright 100% viewfinder with exposure data and bubble level ensures fast reactions under extreme conditions. In these conditions, the K-5 also plays to its strengths, such as the reliable opto-magnetic Shake Reduction on the sensor, or the Dust Removal System (DR II), which uses ultrasound to thoroughly remove dust and other buildup from the sensor.
The video function with autofocus now delivers Full HD quality with 1920 x 1080 pixels in 16:9 format at 25 frames per second.
Using the HDR automatic, even difficult lighting conditions with strong light-dark contrasts can be harmonized in the image by exposing three individual shots of a motif differently and converting them directly in the camera into an optimized image.
Here, the photographer has the option of specifying the degree of alignment. In addition, the automatic alignment function makes the photographer independent of a tripod.
Additional parameters for shadow and highlight correction are available in the dynamic range setting and the color profiles.
The PENTAX smc DA 18-270 mm f/3.5~6.3 ED SDM covers the enormous focal length range from 27.5 mm to 414 mm (converted to 35 mm 35 mm format) Í without changing lenses! Thanks to its practical coverage from wide-angle to super-telephoto, the DA 18-270 mm f/3.5~6.3 ED SDM is perfect as a universal everyday lens and a powerful travel companion.
The shortest shooting distance is 49 cm. With the DA 18-270mm f/3.5~6.3 ED SDM, you can capture still life in nature, as well as excellent close-up shots with a magnification of 1:3.8.
Thanks to the built-in ultrasonic motor, the DA 18-270 mm f/3.5~6.3 ED SDM focuses very precisely while operating extremely smoothly, almost inaudibly quietly and very quickly. In operation on an SDM-compatible camera. With PENTAX K bayonet, SDM autofocus is automatically activated to ensure smooth autofocus operation.
A great deal of know-how from PENTAX's decades of experience in developing optical equipment and products went into the development of this digital lens. In order to give the DA 18-270 mm f/3.5~6.3 ED SDM particularly high sharpness and imaging performance, two special ED (Extra-low Distortion) lens elements were installed. They ensure brilliant image reproduction right into the corners and particularly low chromatic aberrations.
As a special feature, PENTAX shaped the seven blades of the aperture so that the aperture is not polygonal but always perfectly round. This gives contours and lighting effects outside the plane of focus a very harmonious effect, and point light sources are reproduced free of streaks. In addition, the DA 18-270 mm f/3.5~6.3 ED SDM draws a fantastically perfect, soft bokeh.
The maximum aperture of 1:3.5, in combination with the opto-magnetic shake reduction system built into digital PENTAX cameras with K bayonet, grants the photographer additional creative possibilities. Even in unfavorable lighting conditions, such as indoor shots, overcast skies or at dusk, the large aperture still allows fast shutter speeds and thus blur-free images, even without a conspicuous flash or costly additional lighting.
