32.5 MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
The high-resolution 32.5 MP APS-C CMOS sensor of the Canon EOS 90D delivers images with remarkable sharpness and dynamic range, as well as a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 and low noise for working in challenging lighting situations. The sensor and image processor also enable fast performance throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 10 frames per second, record UHD 4K30p video, or capture high-speed Full HD 1080p video at 120 frames per second.

45-point autofocus with cross-type sensors and Dual Pixel CMOS AF system.

The 45-point autofocus system with phase detection and cross sensors provides fast and accurate focusing in difficult lighting conditions down to -3 EV and makes it easier to take photos with the optical viewfinder. For working with telephoto lenses equipped with extenders, 27 of the points are capable of focusing up to an aperture of 8, and the center double cross provides increased precision at brighter aperture values. The cross design of the sensors allows for greater accuracy in low-contrast and mixed-light conditions, and the wide coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects. Four AF point selection modes are available to use the 45 points, including single-point AF, zone AF where one of nine AF zones can be selected, large zone AF where three zones can be selected, and 45-point auto AF selection where the camera automatically selects a single point.

When recording video or shooting in Live View, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is used that has 5481 selectable autofocus points. This focusing system provides smooth and fast focusing performance, similar to how a camcorder captures focus. Dual Pixel CMOS AF integrates two separate photodiodes in each pixel to provide a wide and dense network of phase-detection collection elements across much of the image sensor, reducing "focus hunting" and providing faster and more direct control of focus. When working with still images, this focusing system provides fast and precise focus, making it ideal for shooting and tracking moving subjects, ensuring critical focus is achieved in every shot. When shooting video, the Movie Servo AF mode provides smooth and natural focusing when switching between different subjects or varying distances within the scene, as well as the ability to set tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and face tracking priority. Using the Touch AF system, focusing is possible by simply touching elements within the subject on the touchscreen to change focus in an intuitive way. Subject tracking in movies is also improved, as the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is able to detect subjects and maintain focus even in changing or cluttered scenes.
