With a maximum aperture of 1:1.2, sufficient brightness is quickly provided even in low light conditions without having to resort to the flash. The large aperture also allows precise adjustment of the depth of field, making it ideal for portrait shots.

Appealing reproduction in the out-of-focus area

A circular iris diaphragm contributes to aesthetically pleasing reproduction in the out-of-focus area (bokeh effect) when working with selective focus.

Fast, quiet automatic focusing

The ring-shaped USM (ultrasonic motor) provides super-fast focusing movement almost silently. A fast CPU and optimized AF algorithms also make an important contribution to the high speed of focusing. Thanks to excellent holding torque, inaccuracies are avoided. If desired, electronic focusing can also be performed manually at any time.

Super Spectra coating

Super Spectra coating and suitable lens shapes suppress stray light and aperture reflections, which are more noticeable with digital cameras due to reflection from the image sensor. In addition, the coating improves color balance and increases image contrast for vivid, detailed images.

Precise distance measurement

The lens relays distance information to the camera's E-TTL II flash control - for correct metering of the required flash exposure in virtually all shooting situations.
