DZOFILM X-TRACT 18-28mm T8 FF 90° Probe Macro Zoom
Designed for full-frame sensors, it is fully compatible with S35 formats and offers an equivalent focal length range of 22-35mm T8 in Arri Alexa 35 Open Gate mode. This makes it ideal for use in commercial film production. The detachable front module allows seamless switching between direct and right angle view, allowing flexible adjustment of focal length and perspective even in tight spaces. This versatility gives shots greater spatial depth and improved visual gradation - a key advantage for creative storytelling.
Flexible switching for a full macro perspective
The interchangeable front module offers 0° (direct view) and 90° (right angle view) options, covering 95% of all typical test lens shots. The 90° module has a 360° rotation mechanism that allows flexible horizontal adjustments. The right-angle design also improves camera maneuverability and opens up new design possibilities for variable focal length macro shots. As the first T8 90° trial lens, it uses a newly developed square front element that optimizes relative illumination (RI) and minimizes light loss. Thanks to a simplified prism design and a PET silver-coated reflective layer, reflection is improved so that a constant T8 aperture is maintained across all focal lengths.
Note
Shooting with the 90° module requires mirror correction.
Cinema standard in precision and reliability
The 90° trial lens with 360° rotation mechanism is fully compatible with professional cinema accessories. The rotating mechanism allows quick adjustment of the lens angle for precise horizontal alignment of the image section.
With a water immersion depth of 28 cm, a hydrophobic UV filter coating on both sides and an O-type quick-release clamp, the lens is ideally equipped for demanding shoots. High-precision accessories such as the detachable front lens and clamp allow easy customization and quick angle adjustments. Optional follow focus modules ensure precise focus tracking even during rotation. Additional markings for magnification ratio, waterproofness and rotation scales on the lens housing improve operability and provide an intuitive user experience for filmmakers.
More dimensions for limitless creativity
The combination of prism construction and 360° rotation mechanism adds an extra dimension to the creative possibilities and enables an even more immersive macro experience. The entire lens series has a smooth 300° focus path that has been tested for high continuous load and micrometer precision. This enables precise focus shifts and flexible control of the depth of field. The X-tract lenses are parfocal, which means that the focus remains constant when Zooming. This makes it possible to capture even the finest movements or rapid changes in focal length in razor-sharp focus - ideal for the classic Hitchcock dolly Zoom effect in macro shots.
Superior performance compared to fixed focal lengths
The X-tract series features native focus breathing control, reducing the breathing phenomenon to just 0.5% at 24mm (compared to 39.2% for other 24mm sample fixed focal lengths). Focus breathing becomes almost invisible, eliminating the need for costly corrections in post-production. This ensures seamless visual continuity and stability during focus shifts, creating spectacular cinematic images.
The X-tract 0°-Probe-Zoom achieves a relative illuminance of 70.7 %, while the 90° module achieves 68.6 % - significantly more than the 54.9 % of other 24mm-Probe lenses. This means that the brightness remains constant across the entire Zoom range and delivers professional visual quality.
Agile, flexible and precisely controllable
With a weight of only 1.09-1.13 kg and a length of 41.5-42.1 cm, the lens offers a slim design for smooth operation even in cramped environments, e.g. between book pages or miniature models. The A model has a front diameter of 29.6 mm, while the B model uses square filters of 37.7 × 30.58 mm. Compared to bulky macro setups, the slim tube design offers maximum flexibility. Thanks to the tail-heavy design, the lens' centre of gravity is closer to the camera, which improves stability, whether handheld or with a stabilizer. This minimizes camera shake and allows focus and Zoom adjustments to be controlled more precisely. When used with sliders or robotic arms for large-scale camera movements, the lens offers maximum control precision, reducing subsequent corrections in post-production to a minimum.
