The complex optical construction consists of 8 groups with 10 lens elements, including two double-sided aspherical elements, two with abnormal partial dispersion and floating elements. Compared to the E-mount version, however, the VM version has been made noticeably shorter and over 20 percent lighter. Furthermore, the 12 aperture blades not only form a circular opening at F2.0 and F2.8, but also at F5.6, which enables a circular bokeh from a point light source.
