When taking photos, you use a flash for a good picture in dark ambient light. For a good video, you need a video light for the same reason, otherwise the footage will also be too dark. Modern digital cameras usually have a built-in flash. With camcorders, it is not always built in. For cameras, there are external flash units to improve the effect even more. For camcorders, there are external flash units for the same reason. Because even if a small flash is built in, it is often not enough to illuminate the scene sufficiently in the dark or at dusk and produce really good film shots. If there is no good light, the film recording is virtually unusable.

External flash units can be easily attached to the camera through an accessory shoe. Likewise, there is an accessory shoe for camcorders onto which the video light is attached. The dimensions for the shoe are the same for cameras and camcorders.

Such devices are switched on and off by pressing a button. The mode of operation is therefore different from that of the camera flash, since the environment in which the video is to be shot must be constantly illuminated for a longer period of time.

Power consumption and luminous intensity of your video light

Our lights all have very low power consumption, because tiny semiconductor crystals emit light when the lamp is switched on and current flows. LED video lights have therefore revolutionised the market with their low power consumption. They consume much less power than conventional light sources.

An important aspect when choosing your video light is its luminosity. Luminaires with lower luminosity are used for close-up shots, while luminaires with strong luminosity are also suitable for shooting objects at a greater distance. There are also video lights that are equipped with an additional flash. These lamps produce an extra strong luminosity for a short moment. For this, you need to connect the lamp to the camera with a flash cable.

The power supply of the video light

One aspect you still need to consider is the power supply. Now, there are several options here. Firstly, quite clearly, the mains connection. Here you don't need to charge a battery, but a mains connection is not available everywhere.

The second option is to supply the lamp via the camera's hot shoe. However, this will drain the camera's batteries very quickly.

The third option is to power your video light with a separate battery. This is the best option if you want to use your light outdoors as well.
