The gray surface serves as a reference surface for measuring exposure (18% reference gray) and the white side enables correct white balance for digital photography

You measure the respective side of the control card with your SLR camera and carry out an exposure measurement or a manual white balance - the camera is already perfectly adjusted to the current lighting conditions and guarantees optimal image results.
