It is an L-series ultra-wide-angle lens with Optical Image Stabilizer (IS). It brings an advantage of four stops of exposure over lenses without an image stabilizer - for shots with precise detail. The IS system also comes with a number of other enhancements - including two gyro sensors for greater precision in traditional shooting or camera panning.
