A compact 500mm lens for a completely new photographic experience. With razor-sharp images and outstanding mobility. Product images show optional accessories and application examples .
The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports was developed as an ultra-telephoto lens exclusively for mirrorless system cameras. In a remarkably compact and lightweight body, it offers a focal length of 500mm and outstanding image quality. By using several exclusive, specially manufactured glass lens elements with a large diameter and low dispersion, it has been possible to significantly reduce the size of the lens design without the further use of diffractive optical elements. At the same time, the lens achieves a high resolving power that more than meets the expectations of a 500mm fixed focal length lens
.The handy lens housing is made of high-precision technical plastic parts and magnesium, is dust and splash-proof* and, as is usual with our lenses, is of outstanding build quality. With its high imaging performance, extremely compact size for an ultra-telephoto lens and extensive features, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports offers a new photographic experience for wildlife, aviation, sports and fast action photographers
*The lens is dust and splash-proof, but not waterproof
.Thanks to the new optical design with exclusive low dispersion glass elements, it has been possible to develop a compact lens construction without compromising on optical performance. Furthermore, this design offers excellent correction of aberrations. In addition to its size, which enables hand-held shooting, high-speed autofocus with HLA (High-Response Linear Actuator) drive and the optical stabilizer with OS2 algorithm ensure comfortable and professional photography
.Thanks to a new optical design, it was possible to make the optical system significantly more compact for a lens with a focal length of 500mm. By using exclusive convex lens elements with low dispersion in the front area of the lens, a comparatively short overall length could be achieved. At the same time, these elements contribute to the excellent aberration correction. The high level of production in SIGMA's only production facility in Aizu, Japan, provides the necessary precision for the processing of these exclusive low-dispersion glass elements. The lens has excellent correction of all aberrations, especially axial chromatic aberration, which cannot be corrected by the camera software. This ensures a consistently high resolution from the center of the image to the edge.
Diffractive optical elements are susceptible to flares and ghosting. Thanks to the refractive lenses used, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports delivers clear images without flares and ghosting.
In order to further reduce the effects of unwanted light incidence, additional measures have been taken in the lens design by using the latest simulation technology
.
Theresult is high-contrast and clear images even in difficult lighting situations.
The AF drive is provided by an advanced, electronically controlled HLA linear motor (High-response Linear Actuator), which is characterized by its fast, precise and low-noise operation. The speed and precision offered by this HLA drive are essential for telephoto photography such as sports and bird photography.
The stabilizer with OS2 algorithm used in the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports allows up to 5 stops* to be compensated for when shooting hand-held. Two OS modes ensure the greatest possible flexibility. Mode 1 is suitable for static subjects, while mode 2 is ideal for "followers" of moving objects, such as in motor sports
.In mode 2, the "Intelligent OS", an algorithm specially developed for follow shots, ensures effective stabilization, regardless of the orientation and direction of movement of the lens. This captures the dynamic range of the subject being followed without losing the effect of being pulled along.
*Based on CIPA standard (measured on a 35mm full-frame image sensor)
Lens body and optical system are in perfect harmony thanks to state-of-the-art materials and optimized optical and mechanical design. The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports thus takes account of the trend towards compact and mobile equipment and, as a telephoto fixed focal length, even enables freehand shots
to be taken without compromising onthe usual quality of workmanship. The lens is dust and splash-proof and offers the high robustness of the SIGMA Sports lenses. This also applies to the operating elements such as switches and rings.
To make the lens housing robust and compact at the same time, materials such as TSC and magnesium are used in suitable places. TSC plastics effectively reduce the weight of the lens without compromising on stability. Particularly in the internal structure of the lens, the use of a high-precision manufactured TSC component makes it possible to achieve high robustness with low weight. For external components, the TSC material ensures a high-quality surface that gives the lens its premium character.
*TSC (Thermally-Stable-Composite) is a polycarbonate with a thermal expansion rate similar to that of aluminum
.Like all lenses in the Sports product line, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports is also protected against the ingress of dust and splash water*. The bayonet, control rings, switches and housing connections are specially sealed.
Inaddition, the front element of the lens has a water and oil-repellent coating to make cleaning easier
*The lens is dust and splash-proof, but not waterproof.
The lightweight and robust LH1034-02 lens hood made of TSC is included with the lens
. It adapts tothe slim design of the lens and is rubberized on the front edge to protect it from scratches
.Maximum ease of use in all shooting situations. The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports features an aperture ring and customizable function buttons*, which can be assigned the desired functions via the camera. The L-mount version of the lens is also compatible with the SIGMA TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2x) teleconverters while retaining the AF function. This enables shooting with a focal length of up to 1,000mm
*Only in combination with compatible cameras. The available functions may vary depending on the camera used.
In addition to the focusing range limiter, which can be used to limit the focus range for faster focusing if required, the lens has three AFL buttons that can be individually assigned with selected functions. The AFL buttons are quick and easy to operate, regardless of the camera orientation
, anda user mode switch allows the visibility of the OS effect to be switched in the viewfinder and display. For lenses with L-mount*, the optional SIGMA USB dock UD-11 can be used to customize the function of the user mode switch
*Since no USB dock is available for the Sony E-mount, the default settings cannot be changed for lenses with Sony E-mount.
Many demanding users appreciate the ability to adjust the aperture directly on the lens
.
This is why the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports has an aperture ring. Thanks to its "de-click function", this feature is also interesting for filmmakers. This allows the aperture to be adjusted silently and steplessly. Those who prefer to set the aperture on the camera body can simply use the aperture ring's lock function and are protected against accidental adjustment.
The integrated tripod clamp is made from a robust yet lightweight magnesium alloy. It offers a 90° locking mechanism to make it easy to switch between portrait and landscape format. The detachable tripod clamp foot TS-151* is Arca-Swiss compatible
*compatible with the SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS Sports
The L-Mount version of the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports is compatible with the SIGMA teleconverters TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2.0x). Ultra-telephoto shots with a focal length of up to 1,000mm and full AF support are therefore possible
