Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

With the Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon continues its legacy of powerful work cameras. It is an excellent option for photography and a capable 4K-capable video machine. This multimedia machine features a newly developed 30.4 MP full-frame CMOS sensor coupled with the DIGIC 6+ image processor to balance fine detail and resolution with low light performance and sensitivity. It operates in a native range of ISO 100-32000, which can be extended to an impressive ISO 50-102400, for sharp, low-noise images in a wide range of conditions. Alongside these image quality improvements, users can look forward to an enhanced AF system, built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS and much more.

To deliver detailed images quickly and effectively, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV utilizes the power of the DIGIC 6+ image processor, which can process up to 7 frames per second during continuous shooting. It also uses a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor to evaluate the scene and subjects for accurate exposures under a variety of different lighting conditions. An improved High Density Reticular AF with 61 points increases the camera's speed by detecting and locking onto subjects quickly and accurately - for razor-sharp photos. A new AF area selection button provides direct access to this setting, while

in video, Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Movie Servo AF provide smooth focus tracking during a shot. The photographer can even use the 3.2-inch LCD with a screen diagonal of 1.62 m to set the focus point with a simple tap. In addition, the camera can now record DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) video at up to 30 frames per second and create 8.8 MP stills from the video for even faster shooting. Coupled with the Dual Pixel sensor architecture is a brand new feature for Canon: Dual Pixel RAW, which allows fine-tuning of certain image parameters such as bokeh shift and focus micro-adjustment after shooting.

The body has been further refined to improve comfort and accessibility, as well as increase durability and weather resistance. The Canon N3 remote control port has been moved to the front of the camera body and both GPS and Wi-Fi with NFC have been added to make this model a connected camera.

30.4 MP full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6+ image processor

In line with previous members of the main 5D series, the Mark IV seeks to balance high resolution and low-light performance with a newly developed 30.4 MP full-frame CMOS sensor. This provides a beneficial increase in overall resolution without compromising on sensitivity. In addition, thanks to the DIGIC 6+ image processor it is paired with, it offers impressive performance within a native range of ISO 100-32000, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400.

Versatility is the name of the game with the Canon EOS 5D, as it must be able to handle landscapes and weddings alike. By using a 150,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, photographers can rely on the camera for difficult subjects. This sensor also features face detection as well as flicker detection, which can ensure correct exposure in less-than-ideal lighting situations. In addition, the camera offers an improved continuous shooting rate of 7 frames per second, making it a great option for events and action.

High Density Retina AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF system

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV features an enhanced High Density Reticular AF system with 61 phase-detection points, 41 of which are cross-type and all of which work up to a sensitivity of f/8. The center point can operate down to -3 EV to work in extremely low light conditions. Compared to previous versions, this sensor has an extended vertical coverage of 24% at the edges and 8% in the center to better track and locate subjects in the image.

In addition to improved tracking and focusing when using the optical viewfinder for stills, Live View and video can now use Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the actual image sensor. This provides approximately 80% coverage of phase detection autofocus for faster and more accurate focusing in these modes. This is ideal for video as the user can enjoy smoother focusing in the rack without the drawbacks normally associated with contrast-based systems. Plus, this works well with the touchscreen features, allowing the shooter to simply tap to adjust focus.

DCI 4K video recording

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is designed for both professional photo and video shooting and supports DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 30 frames per second at 500 Mbps, as well as Full HD 1080p recording at 60 frames per second and HD 720p at 120 frames per second for slow motion playback. For in-camera recording, 4K video has 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color depth, while Full HD 1080p footage has 4:2:0 sampling. Uncompressed Full HD 1080p video can also be stored via HDMI on an optional external recorder with 4:2:2 color sampling. 4K video is recorded using a central 4096 x 2160 area of the sensor with a 1.74x crop to record video with an ideal 1:1 pixel sampling ratio, while Full HD recording utilizes the entire frame.

Audio can be recorded via the built-in stereo microphone, or optionally an external microphone can be used via the 3.5mm microphone socket. Real-time audio monitoring is also possible via the 3.5 mm headphone socket. The 4K video recording also offers the option of taking 8.8 MP photos during playback on the rear touchscreen and saving them as individual images.

Dual Pixel RAW

Implemented

for the first time on the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Dual Pixel RAW allows the photographer to record all the information that the sensor's unique pixel architecture can provide, offering the ability to make fine adjustments after shooting. These adjustments include Sharpness Fine Tuning, which allows you to easily adjust the focus point to bring out additional detail, shift the bokeh for better composition and reduce the effects of ghosting in your photos. This requires the Digital Photo Professional 4.5 software from Canon.

Body design

The large 3.2" LCD monitor with 1.62 m screen diagonal (Clear View II) is anti-reflective and ensures bright, vivid image reproduction and Live View shooting. The touchscreen interface can be used for intuitive touch-to-focus control and adjustment of settings in the menus, while

a dedicated AF mode selector button below the rear joystick provides further access to settings and allows quick, intuitive access to frequently changed options.
Two slots for CompactFlash and SD memory cards allow for expansion of storage options through overflow recording or in-camera file type separation during shooting.

The Intelligent Viewfinder II uses a pentaprism design and provides a bright viewing option. When using the viewfinder, AF points are highlighted in red to improve visibility in low light conditions. The viewfinder can also be configured to display a range of other shooting aids, such as an electronic level, grid, flicker detection, white balance, metering mode, AF information and other settings.

A Mirror Vibration Control system helps minimize mechanical vibration to better ensure focus during long exposures or fast continuous shooting.

The rugged magnesium alloy body is dust and weatherproof for use in harsh environments.
Other camera features

A built-in GPS module enables in-camera geotagging of images and automatic time synchronization with the Universal Time Code via satellites. The module is compatible with American GPS, Russian GLONASS and Japanese Quasi-Zenith-Michibiki satellites, providing broad support.
Digital Lens Optimizer technology compensates for a range of optical defects of various lenses, including chromatic aberration, distortion, peripheral brightness and diffraction, and the camera can store lens data to avoid the need to re-register lenses before each use. The camera can handle this process in real time and deliver JPEGs with the corrections already made.
